The Augustine Committee briefed the White House on August 14th, released a summary report at the end of August, and released a full report at the end of October. We are well into the holiday season, and the President has many other issues to deal with. What this means, is that no decision on space is likely before the New Year.
So, what will happen in 2010? Decisions will need to be made as to the future direction of US human spaceflight. I have my own predictions, but we Committee members agreed to not make our personal views known until after the White House sets the direction.
But, what do you think?

What I'd like to see happen is the President and Bolden decide to:
1. increase the NASA budget by at least $3 billion annually
2. continue the Space Shuttle program until a successor vehicle is ready
3. prioritize setting up a permanent settlement on the surface of the Moon
3. utilize NASA's Sidemount concept in order to achieve this goal as quickly and cheaply as possible while terminating the Ares program while continuing to fund the development of the Orion CEV.
4. Start fully funding the development of the Altair lunar vehicle and lunar base modules by 2011 so that we can start landing humans and lunar base modules on the lunar surface before 2020.
5. Commit the Air Force to develop a manned reusable winged derived from the X-37 OTV program.
6. Commit the Air Force to develop a SSTO shuttle derived Jupiter-lite booster (Jupiter without the SRBs) order to launch the Orion or Winged vehicles into orbit: an easy access to LEO SSTO vehicle that would be attractive for NASA, the Air Force, and most importantly for the emerging private commercial launch industry.
Honestly I would like to see the US hook up with other countries and make a vehicle for everyones needs. I'm sure that's impossible thought, but you never know when it comes to space.
I'd hate to see us not going into space and it really seems that could happen. Has the ball been dropped or is there even a ball?
Mr. Chiao, what are your thoughts on Spaceshiptwo that Sir Branson showed us this week?
New NASA Science Program Options for 2010 Consideration
The new NASA Lunar Science Programs shall be developed by the NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD) from 2010 on.
I) Lunar Science Programs shall cover the following mission:
1) Advanced lunar remote sensing satellites.
2) Lunar communication satellites.
3) Lunar data relay satellites.
4) Lunar GPS satellites
5) Other unmanned vehicles, such as the unmanned ISRU surface elements.
II) Lunar Science Programs development schedule:
1) Phase A: 2011-2012
2) Phase B: 2013-2015
3) Phase CD: 2015-2020
III) Lunar Science Programs operation schedule:
IV) Lunar Science Programs management site:
NASA’s GSFC shall lead the all management actions.
i would love to see NASA's budget increased and the Space Shuttle program extended.
Spaceship2 is great. glad to know the private programs are going great!!
Happy space new year.
Merry space flights.
Best wishes to all.
For 2010 I'd like to see commercial crew vehicle design continue to be supported by NASA and the government. While the commercial sector provides low earth orbit capability I would like to see NASA focus on the development of a truly heavy lift rocket system.
In a utopian vision I would like to see NASA clean up the massive cost and schedule over runs on the Mars Science Laboratory, James Webb and the infamous NPOESS programs. There are too many intricate and connected layers for that to happen, but as long as we're making wishes...
I strongly support most of Marcel Williams' points, in particular items 1,2,3(sic) and 4.
Why does no-one realise yet that Sidemount is a crock?
It is designed expressly to leverage Stuttle C back into existance. Fine by me!
Gets rid of that silly stuck-on-the-side-of-ET business.
Also the Space Forontier Foundation had an excellent post about IKE and the military / industrial complex. Ike did good, creating a civilian NASA.
Let USAF play with their boy-toys as they wish. And they already have the launchers they wanted - the EELVs.
Space exprloration is civilian and cannot be accomplished without international partners.
Like Canada. Amd of course the Russian Bear.

well this year don't happen nothing important in this area, is a real shame because astronauts want to prove the effect of Levitra in the space, this has been one of the most greatest question in the mind of the human being for some time ago.
